Rolex has always prioritized controlling the thickness of the Daytona and ensuring the movement's serviceability, leading to the adoption of a unique gear train layout in the 4130 and 4131 calibers. Rolex positioned the entire chronograph gear train on the back of the movement (the assembly side)—including the 12-hour chronograph gear—resulting in an exceptionally compact design. In contrast, standard chronograph movements typically place the hour-recording gear on the dial side (driven directly by the mainspring barrel); while this design is simpler, it falls short of the Rolex Daytona in terms of movement thickness and ease of maintenance. However, there is one catch to Rolex's "ingenious design": there is simply no extra space available to add even a single additional gear.
